I have lost my idle themes

In a winter’s night on high,

In a winter’s tale t’was told to me

By trusting strangers that accost

Me for a pint of beer.

I have watched the starlit sky

For to kindle my heart’s desire,

— Some vision of immortal bliss.

I have sought for total peace,

For enthrallment of a crueler kind

That could waken my dull spirit.

I have counted my flaws, one by one

And yet have remained a happy man;

Although I have made mistakes

My pride is still unbroken.

Desires are nothing to me

And yet dreams are my greatest treasure.

Other tears are burning fiercely

On the brim of my thoughts

And other voices have spoken

In the reaches of my brain,

Till by some delusive trigger

Have I come forth with another illusion.
