I.3. Grammar of Western Elven
Generally the grammatical system of Eleiar stayed the same. An important innovation is the introduction of an article which assumed the role of the gender particle.
I.3.1. Nouns
The declension
of Eleiar was preserved in West Elven. The modifications which
developed by the phonetic rules of Eleiar remained, only changed
by the new development.
As an example of the consonantic declension we again take siadd
(people):
singular | plural | ||
nominative | siadd | nominative | siaddis |
genitive | siaddu | genitive | siaddus |
dative | siadde | dative | siaddes |
accusative | siaddach | accusative | siaddichis |
locative | siaddinte | locative | siaddintes |
partitive | siaddu |
Example 2: geora (horn)
singular | plural | ||
nominative | geora | nominative | georas |
genitive | georó | genitive | georós |
dative | georá | dative | georás |
accusative | georach | accusative | georiches |
locative | georinte | locative | georintes |
partitive | georo |
Example 3: indire (hunter, m.)
singular | plural | ||
nominative | indire | nominative | indires |
genitive | indireu | genitive | indireus |
dative | indire | dative | indires |
accusative | indiréch | accusative | indiréches |
locative | indirente | locative | indirentes |
partitive | indirú |
The most importantinnovation of Western elven is the introduction of an article in place of the gender particle of Eleiar. This developed from the demonstrative ach or che. The exact articulation of this demonstrative stem can not be told with certainty; compare che, (but) this and West Elven acha, the. Most probably a form *ach was combined with the gender particle in Western elven. In the following we will show the forms of both genders. The article is declined like a pronoun:
singular |
|
|
plural |
|
|
nominative | achar | acho | nominative | achires | achos |
genitive | acha | achá | genitive | achas | achás |
dative | achá | achó | dative | achás | achós |
accusative | achach | achách | accusative | achiches | acháches |
locative | achan | achán | locative | achines | achánes |
partitive | acho | achú |
As was already the case in Eleiar, adjectives in West Elven declined like nouns. The rules for the noun phrase have adapted to the new article; e.g. achar siadd Eleiun (the people of Eleiun) vs. acho coldón acha siaddu (the joy of the people).
The same holds true for the comparison,
even if the phonetic changes of Western Elven brought some differences;
compare cethùral : cètherel (comparative
of thurel, fast).
Examples:
Comparative: cetherel (faster); ceculda (happier);
cárcel (shurer); cárdel (prouder)
Superlative: notherel (fastest); noculda (happiest);
nárcel (shurest); nárdel (proudest);
achach notherilech indiréch (the fastest hunters).
